Copyediting Services

Ready for the shine?

You’ve written an intriguing novel or created a fascinating work of nonfiction. But before it leaves your hands to go to an agent or a publisher (even if that’s you), you want it to be the best it can be. You want it polished. That’s what I do. I am the polisher (aka copy editor) who can make your work shine.

I have more than twenty years of experience as a newspaper copy editor, over the past ten years I have copyedited more than fifty manuscripts (fiction and nonfiction across all genres), and I am an author of five published books. As a professional copy editor, I recognize and fix mistakes in spelling and punctuation and am also well acquainted with the rules of grammar. English evolves over time and dynamic guidelines in using the language keep evolving. Help from a professional copy editor is important to make sure you’re using the correct conventions. My expertise also includes fact-checking and context-checking. (I know that your character would be fishing for halibut, not tuna, off the coast of Alaska and that a man with a CBE grade of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is not entitled to be called “Sir.”)

I am not a one-size-fits-all copy editor. I follow the publisher-preferred Chicago Manual of Style, but I also respect each writer’s tone and style. My goal is to make what you have written better, not to make it what I would have written.

This is what I do, don’t do, accept, and require:

  • I accept projects that are fiction or nonfiction, 40,000-120,000 words and
    below 40,000 words on a case-by-case basis.
  • Manuscripts must be submitted by email to http://fictionontheedge@gmail.com as attachments and in Word .docx format.
  • I reserve the right to accept or reject any project upon receipt.
  • I will complete projects within fourteen days of acceptance.
  • I edit in Track Changes and the edited version will show all the revisions and comments I have made. Of course, it is up to you to accept or reject the revisions. I suggest you keep, for your own reference, a copy of the unedited version that you submitted.
  • I charge flat rates, depending on word count. I offer a 20-percent discount on any second project you submit when you recommend a client who also uses my services.
  • I edit according to Chicago Manual of Style except where Merriam-Webster overrides.
  • Please provide the genre of your manuscript.
  • Manuscripts must be double-spaced.
  • Pages must be numbered (optional on title page).
  • Use common formatting for paragraph indents, margins. I DO NOT MAKE FORMATTING CHANGES.
  • Use common, easy-to-read fonts, such as Times, Calibri, Arial. No script fonts and avoid extended (like several pages of) italicized copy.
  • Do not use straight quote marks. The curved version (“ ” ‘ ‘) is the accepted form.
  • Make sure there is only one space after periods at the end of a sentence.
  • Explicit language is fine, but it has to be an integral part of the story. I will not read gratuitous—or for the purpose of entertainment—violence, sexual abuse, or racist or misogynistic language. This is somewhat subjective, but I think I am rather broad-minded in this area, and we can discuss, if necessary.
  • E-mail me with any questions. I look forward to working with you.
